Commercial Sample ist ein Projekt, das den internationalen Zollbestimmungen entspricht, die besagen, dass ein Buch nur als Geschenk von einer Privatperson an eine andere Privatperson verschickt werden kann: Eine Spende oder ein Geschenk eines Künstlers, einer kleinen Presse oder eines Selbstverlegers an eine Bibliothek, eine Galerie oder eine Privatperson kann oder wird mit Einfuhrzöllen und Steuern belegt und wird oft an den Absender zurückgeschickt, nachdem es in den Grauzonen des Postsystems zirkuliert hat.
Diese Publikation wurde als Handelsmuster im Geiste der Mail Art-Tradition erstellt und nutzt das Vokabular des Zollsystems, um in den Genuss von Zollerleichterungen und Mehrwertsteuerbefreiung zu kommen. Um sie als Muster zu kennzeichnen, wurde sie durch Perforation und Gummistempelung so verändert, dass sie für den Wiederverkauf ungeeignet ist.
