Christophoros Kyriakides was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1949. He was an architecture draughtsman and considered himself an inventor. In 1988 he self-published “Six Continents Stars Compass”, ‘an entertaining and educational’ board game. He considered the game inventive, recreative and formative for all ages and intended its global distribution. The game received no recognition from the public and now only a few copies exist.
In the board game, Kyriakides draws a journey with impossible objects, invented maps, landscapes and anagrammatic poetry with mathematical diagrams. One comes across an abstracted reflection of 80s locality, world politics, obsession with the American dream, an isolated emotional darkness but also a universal landscape. A chance encounter of Marina Xenofontos with this game catalysed a strong fascination that led to the uncovering of his archive. This publication, a part of Xenofontos’ practice-based research, brings to the fore the rich universe of Kyriakides’ personal symbolism that shecreatively harnesses as a means of an alternative, atypical handling and systematisation of themes and issues that she finds affinities with.

Tatsächlich ist das Phänomen Farbe hochkomplex, und so versucht die vor dreißig Jahren, am 17. Juni 1992, eröffnete Bonner Kunst– und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, kurz Bundeskunsthalle, in ihrer aktuellen Schau »Farbe ist Programm« etwas von dieser Komplexität zu vermitteln. Rainer K. Wick bedauert, dass dies der Patchwork–Schau in Bonn nur bedingt gelingt.

Betritt man die Ausstellung im Erdgeschoss der Bundeskunsthalle und lässt den Blick zunächst nach rechts schweifen, sieht man sich einer Memento–mori–Inszenierung des belgischen Künstlers Hans Op de Beeck gegenüber, einem dreidimensionalen Stillleben mit Früchten, Karaffe und Glas, Kerze, einem geschlossenen und einem aufgeschlagenen Buch sowie einem Totenschädel – alles grau in grau (abgesehen von den blauen Farbreflexen, die von den LED–Lichtstelen Gardar Eide Einarssons herrühren). Eine Installation in einer Ausstellung zum Thema Farbe, die sich durch die Abwesenheit von Farbe auszeichnet, mag zunächst überraschen. Abgesehen von der Vanitas–Symbolik, die durch das Grau unterstrichen wird, kann die Arbeit Op de Beecks aber daran erinnern, dass die Welt vor Erfindung der Teerfarbstoffe (Anilinfarben) im 19. Jahrhundert weitaus weniger farbig gewesen ist und Grau wesentlich stärker den Alltag prägte. Bunte Kleidung etwa war im Mittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit den Noblen und Reichen vorbehalten und fungierte als Medium der sozialen Distinktion, während sich die einfache Bevölkerung die teuren gefärbten Stoffe kaum leisten konnte.
Dass der »Nichtfarbe« Grau im Kontext der Buntfarben ein systematischer Ort zukommt, zeigen bekanntlich die klassischen Künstlerfarbenlehren. So erscheint in Philipp Otto Runges »Farbenkugel« (1810) im Kugelmittelpunkt idealerweise ein mittleres neutrales Grau, und der Bauhaus–Künstler Johannes Itten bemerkt in seiner »Kunst der Farbe« (1961), dass sich zwei im Farbkreis diametral gegenüberliegende Farben (Komplementärfarben) in der pigmentären Mischung zu Grau »vernichten«. Die in Vietnam geborene und in Paris lebende Künstlerin Thu–Van Tran hat in ihrem monumentalen, 2,20 x 3,10 m großen Acrylbild »Colors of Grey« (2022) diesen Prozess der »Vernichtung« von Buntfarben mit einer explizit politischen Bedeutung aufgeladen. Eva Kraus, seit 2020 Intendantin der Bundeskunsthalle, schreibt dazu, die Künstlerin nutze »symbolisch die farbigen Kodierungen der so genannten ‚Rainbow Herbicides‘ – darunter das zu trauriger Berühmtheit gelangte Schädlingsbekämpfungsmittel ‚Agent Orange‘«, das die USA im Vietnamkrieg mit verheerenden Folgen für Mensch und Natur zur Waldentlaubung eingesetzt haben. Durch schichtweise Farbüberlagerung löschen sich im Bild Orange, Blau, Grün und andere Farben – die Autorin spricht von »toxischen ‚Agenten‘« – gegenseitig aus und vernichten sich im Grau, das sich als subtile Anklage und als »Mahnmal sinnloser Kriegsführung entpuppt.«
Die Ausstellung versammelt Beiträge von mehr als vierzig Künstler:innen ganz verschiedener Ausrichtung, die es dem Besucher nicht leicht machen, so etwas wie einen roten Faden zu erkennen. Dies ist unter anderem der Tatsache geschuldet, dass es sich um eine Ausstellung handelt, an der das gesamte Kurator:innenteam der Bundeskunsthalle (Eva Kraus, Johanna Adam, Susanne Annen, Miriam Barhoum, Daniela Ebert, Katharina Chrubasik, Susanne Kleine, Agnieszka Lulińska, Henriette Pleiger sowie Co–Kurator Liam Gillick) mitgewirkt hat. Ohne ein stimmiges Ganzes anzustreben, präsentiert sich die Schau als Patchwork, das aus den persönlichen Interessen und individuellen Präferenzen der einzelnen Kurator:innen resultiert. Die Folge: Ein freier, nicht geleiteter Parcours, dessen »assoziative Herangehensweise« – bei didaktischer Abstinenz – als »bewusster Teil der Inszenierung« angepriesen wird. Und der Titel der Ausstellung »Farbe ist Programm« klingt zwar gut und macht neugierig, bleibt letztlich aber so unverbindlich, ja inhaltsleer, wie die Parolen so mancher politischer Parteien. Dessen ungeachtet ermöglicht die Schau in ihrem Facettenreichtum ein breites Spektrum ästhetischer Erfahrungen und bietet im Hinblick auf Fragen wie die der Nutzung von Farben, ihrer medialen Funktion, ihrer Symbolik und ihrer Bedeutung für Individuum und Gesellschaft manchen Denkanstoß.

This artist’s book is the result of Herbarium Cataplasma, a twofold community art project that Laurence Aëgerter developed at the invitation of the city of Leeuwarden in Friesland, the Netherlands. Aëgerter led a careful reconstruction of the plan of the medicinal garden of the medieval Abbey of Saint Gall on an unused plot of land in Leeuwarden, which was once part of a convent. This project was realized in collaboration with the local residents. Aëgerter also invited the residents for a symbolical healing ritual of destroyed landscapes. She selected 100 images by searching the web for photographs of disasters created by nature and man throughout the world.
Participants were invited to treat the photographs of destroyed landscapes with the medicinal plants from their newly built garden, with appropriate herbal therapies (e.g. cannabis for anxiety relief or ginger against pain from burns). As the source images were mainly used as news photographs, Aëgerter’s book relates to a newspaper design.

In Freeing Architecture, Ishigami elaborates upon his most recent research into function, form, scale and the environment in architecture, thereby revealing his vision for the future of the field. Far from being tools prior to construction, the models assembled in the exhibition were made specifically for the occasion. As viewers contemplate these hand-crafted works, assembled in the architect’s studio over the course of one year, one can see the many steps and the painstaking work that led to the development of their final form. All different in terms of their material, size and level of detail, they offer a glimpse of the slow maturation process, necessary for the creation of Ishigami’s architectural works. Works infused by a poetics that is achieved as much through experimentation, as it is by theory, knowledge, and technology.

Das Künstlerkollektiv aus dem Wald kommt wieder nach Regensburg. 24.10.-06.12.2013 im W1- Zentrum für junge Kultur, mit so vielen Tier-Sprüchen in Gelb im gelben Raum. Schwarzlichtbeleuchtung. die gelben Drucke und Zeichnungen konnten die Besucher mit einer blauen Taschenlampe sichtbar machen. Soundinstalltion und Textinstallationen, so-VIELE Tiere.

Die Besucher der Ausstellung "TAM TAM in RGB" konnte mit speziellen Taschenlampen die ausgestllten Bilder erkunden, mit einem Stift selbst mitgestalten und durch Schütteln der Rahmen Aktionen steuern. Auf diese Weise konnte die dung dung-Maschine von RUMPELN, der Klopapierdrucker von Mario Lukas und der Raum der Putzfrau aktiviert werden. Uwe Hering, vom Amt für kommunale Jugendarbeit schlüpfte bei der Ausstellung von TAM TAM im W1 in die Rolle des Bürgermeisters und eröffnete die Ausstellung mit einem Scherenschnitt.

I’m a young illustrator currently moored on the Thames in my houseboat. Working from my home studio I like to draw in a variety of mediums, more recently focusing on vector graphics. I enjoy the fast paced nature of vectors, which allows me to capture vivid ideas in a hopefully bold, interesting and thought provoking manner. Working regardless of brief I like to continue to produce a body of work to satisfy my creative habits. This has led to sharing daily drawings online via Instagram, which is a great platform to discover and meet other creatives. I have had the honour of working with some fantastic individuals over the past year, which I try to share online via my website. This September I plan to go to Central Saint Martins to further my studies, devote my time to and produce more art! I’m looking forward to all that this opportunity has to offer.

Artist Gabriel Hensche and curator Ashlee Conery have compiled a catalogue of the work Hensche produced while in residence at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, in 2017. The publication includes witness reports that are formally based on actual incident report forms. Adopting the posture of an onlooker, while at the same time acknowledging his role as instigator, Hensche recounts observations of his works as incidents by taking into account the involvement of people and circumstances that led to the events. These protocols are concluded with a final report by Conery in which she adopts the conditions of a mother, a partner and a particle for considering one’s own perspective when acting as a witness, a curator or a bystander.

The St Mary’s Mother and Baby Home was run by the Bon Secours Sisters on behalf of the Irish State to house unmarried mothers and their children. The location of the graves of 796 infants and children who died in the Home between 1926 and 1961 is unknown, though local knowledge, the research of local historian Catherine Corless, and recent excavations point to a field near the old site of the Home, as well as the likelihood that some children were illegally adopted. International media attention in 2014 led to the Irish government’s Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes, which is still underway.
