It’s part of Art Prison, an ongoing project in which an artist gets invited to come and make a stencilprinted book at Knust, Extrapool. Som is filled with very detailed and hatched drawings of animals, structures/patterns, landscapes and other nature subjects with a hazy, yet a bit dark and pleasant feel.

This book presents photos taken by Roman Signer on a 2005 journey through the Carpathian Mountains, which took him to the Ukraine and Romania. The photographs evidence brief stops at the side of the road and present subjects that fall into two distinct catagories: home-grown fruits, vegetables and other produce for sale, carefully displayed on stools or small tables, and loving memorials of flowers, crosses and wreaths for deceased family members and friends who were road casualties.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the artist Ed Ruscha created a series of small photo-conceptual artist’s books, among them Twentysix Gas Stations, Various Small Fires, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Thirtyfour Parking Lots, Real Estate Opportunities, and A Few Palm Trees. Featuring mundane subjects photographed prosaically, with idiosyncratically deadpan titles, these “small books” were sought after, collected, and loved by Ruscha’s fans and fellow artists. Over the past thirty years, close to 100 other small books that appropriated or paid homage to Ruscha’s have appeared throughout the world. This book collects ninety-one of these projects, showcasing the cover and sample layouts from each along with a description of the work. It also includes selections from Ruscha’s books and an appendix listing all known Ruscha book tributes.

Das Bild der Frau ist überpräsent. Die Publikation zeigt
dem entsprechend viele chromogene Frauenbildnisse, nur wenige Beispiele, die Männer abbilden. Meistenteils Werbeaufträge für die Kosmetik- und Textilproduktion in der DDR, der Fotograf: Jürgen Rach, Bildjournalist und Bildautor für Werbung in der DDR mit staatlicher Zulassung, versteht sich. Rach war wohnhaft in Dresden und verantwortlich für die Fotografien in „Dresden“, Führer in Fotos, VEB F.A. Brockhaus Verlag Leipzig, DDR, 1974.
Auf der 3. Pressekonferenz des Zentralkomitees der SED Mitte April 1959 hatte das Politbüro per Beschluss die Abkehr von „starren und gestellten Fotos“ gefordert. Pressefotografien hätten „das pulsierende Leben darzustellen und den Menschen zu zeigen, der die sozialistische Gesellschaft gestaltet“ habe. Ein gutes Pressefoto, heißt es weiter, müsse „Bewegung atmen und die für das Ganze gültigen Details überzeugend ausdrücken“. Die große Schwäche waren die Bilder aus Politik und Alltag. Diese Worte bezogen sich auch auf die zu diesem Zeitpunkt laufende 1. Pressefotoschau der DDR. Hier fehlte, so das Protokoll, „fast völlig die Darstellung unseres breiten demokratischen Lebens, an dem jeder Bürger irgendwie teilhat.
Dem Anspruch hinkte die journalistische Bildproduktion bis 1989 hinterher. Das Bild blieb zumeist Illustration eines primär zu vermittelnden Textes. Primitive Schemata gerieten im nachhinein zur Karikatur.
So verhält es sich auch bisweilen in den Bildreportagen von J. Rach.
Doch anders bei den Werbebildern. Hier herrscht eine Art von Schemata vor, die macht schon eher Sinn. „Lessons in Posing Subjects“ würde Robert Heineken das nennen. Dazu kommt eine Qualität des Ausdrucks in den Gesichtern dieser Models, die man heute vermissen mag. Es schlich sich unbemerkt eine Indifferenz in die Bilder, wenn die Ideologie der Politagitation nicht vorherrschend an der Bildproduktion beteiligt war.
