Rex Reason presents the Periodic Table of the Elements in book form. A colour-coding system is set up (black for solids, blue for liquids and yellow synthetics) but where we might expect to find hydrogen, helium or lithium we find Yul Brynner, William Hogarth and Maria Callas. The selected names relate to the chemical symbol for each element: both letters must appear in the chosen name for example, Bertolt Brecht (Br, Bromine).
A loose logic prevails in the choice of names, for example names in red, gases, are from Greek myth or history and the yellow synthetic elements are given their proper names. However, Patterson disrupts this system with red herrings, mysteries and riddles that test the reader’s knowledge and that expose the inherent human desire to establish order and meaning

This new artists’ book by the celebrated Swiss artist-duo gathers 800 images taken from worldwide magazine advertisements. Designed by NORM in close collaboration with the artists, the book, stemming from Fischli/Weiss’ contribution to the Ringier AG Annual Report 2007, is a very generous if slightly nauseating collection of photos, slogans, and messages that constitute our contemporary media landscape. The Office gallery is delighted to present the most recent work from the controversial, British artist/taxidermist Polly Morgan titled ‘FOUNDATIONS AND REMAINS’. Since 2005 the London based artist has managed to create a visual language of her own through the use of animals as raw materials of her work and their placement as protagonists in scenes that are unnatural to them.
Though her peculiar work, she is forcing us to look at the animals used, as if for the first time, free from previous associations, deliberately challenging the fragile relationship between humans and animals.
The major work of the exhibition titled ‘FOUNDATIONS/REMAINS’ has been made using 2428 cast crow femurs that are each painted by hand. The glue used is identical in colour to the fat present in the joints of bones, so it bears the same colour and consistency of a real animal skeleton. This work is inspired by Charnel Houses (Ossuaries) which were decorative buildings essentially used to pile high skeletons in order to save space. The structure was built using plans from Sol Lewitt's spiral tower “Untitled” 1989.

Loose Associations is a periodical, book format publication from The Photographers’ Gallery offering a diverse set of reflections on photography and image culture. Loosely inspired by the gallery’s exhibition programme, LA includes essays both written and visual, artist pages, images, interviews, fiction and philosophy from a wide range of contributors.
In this issue, the first to focus on the work of a single artist, we have brought together a selection of Roger Mayne’s photographs, alongside newly commissioned writing by Anna Douglas, Owen Hatherley and Bob Stanley. This publication is an accompaniment to our exhibition Roger Mayne, 3 March – 11 June 2017.

Best known for his series on clandestine military bases and spy satellites, Trevor Paglen’s practice reaches far beyond museum walls. Instead, it encompasses a variety of disciplines. from image-making and installations to investigative journalism, writing, engineering, geography, and sound design. Along the way, Paglen challenges our traditional notions of fine art. He has published a number of books on the functioning of the US intelligence services, installed a series of Autonomy Cubes that allow access to the entirely anonymous Tor network, and is currently working on his own satellite to be launched into space in summer 2018. In a sweeping conversation with mono.kultur, Trevor Paglen talked about the volatility of truth, the dilemmas of the Anthropocene, and why Artificial Intelligence will not outlast humanity. True to its precious content, the issue comes in a Static Shielding Bag normally used for sensitive electronic products. In loose reference to computer coding as well as archival documents, it contains a main booklet with the text and excerpts from Paglen’s current cycle on machine vision, as well as six ‘attachments’ covering seminal projects from his career to date.

Heft zur Ausstellung "Kriegskinder", 15.09.–21.10.2018, im Lothringer13 Nest.
Kriegskinder sind die Jahrgänge derer, die in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus zur Welt kamen und den Krieg erlebt haben. Um sie geht es in diesem Fotoband von Frederike Helwig. Sie schauen zurück, sprechen teilweise zum ersten Mal darüber, was sie geprägt hat. Traumata oder transgenerationale Folgen kommen selten zur Sprache und spiegeln somit das bis heute übliche Schweigen. Der Betrachter ist deshalb aufgefordert, zwischen den Zeilen zu lesen, über die eigene Familiengeschichte zu reflektieren und einen Dialog über dieses schlimmste Kapitel der deutschen Geschichte zu beginnen, so Autorin Alexandra Senfft im Vorwort des Buches Kriegskinder.
Das Projekt zeigt aktuelle Porträts einer Generation, deren Erinnerungen bald verschwunden sein werden. Anhand von Interviewauszügen, die den Fotos der Zeitzeugen gegenüber gestellt werden, ergibt sich ein komplexes Bild der Kriegskinder-Jahrgänge, die in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus zur Welt kamen. Ein Bild das nicht historisierend funktioniert, sondern die Prägungen heutiger Politik und Gesellschaft thematisiert.
