Rex Reason presents the Periodic Table of the Elements in book form. A colour-coding system is set up (black for solids, blue for liquids and yellow synthetics) but where we might expect to find hydrogen, helium or lithium we find Yul Brynner, William Hogarth and Maria Callas. The selected names relate to the chemical symbol for each element: both letters must appear in the chosen name for example, Bertolt Brecht (Br, Bromine).
A loose logic prevails in the choice of names, for example names in red, gases, are from Greek myth or history and the yellow synthetic elements are given their proper names. However, Patterson disrupts this system with red herrings, mysteries and riddles that test the reader’s knowledge and that expose the inherent human desire to establish order and meaning

The publication Spheres is the creative documentation of a close collaboration between an artist and the editor, graphic designer Philippe Karrer. Every issue is dedicated to a young artist and their work, in each case exploring character, surroundings, every-day life, inspirations and ideas using unconventional innovative formats so as to create a different, more visual approach and understanding of the artist and his or her work. Melanie Bonajo explores the relationship of the individual to its surroundings in a commodified, globalised culture. In her work, she uncovers how our ideas of identity, genre, value and such structures formed by conventions are ever shift ing to feelings of uncertainty and instability. She approaches these issues by trying to newly create, to turn around overpowering views and conditions that are today so influenced by our consumer society and tries to get nearer to traits that are rooted in human nature.

Jacob invites us into an intimate space that serves as a shelter for a nomadic subject, the pilgrim. Free of any territorial attachment, this figure sets out on a devotional journey, motivated by the desire to seek the sacred. Thus, the pilgrim wanders into inhospitable lands, submitting himself to absolute isolation. A solitary exodus towards uncertainty, far away from the worldly, from society, and in a way, from the self. This figure of the pilgrim becomes the leitmotiv of Jacob’s work - its isolation, loss of identity, but also, its vitality. Concepts which she also invokes in her intuitive drawings, that are aesthetically close to Art Brut. "The Room of the Pilgrim" explores the liberty and emancipation that arises from this retreat. In that way, the abandoned refuge built by Jacob speaks of lost rights. The rights to anonymity and intimacy being some of the most recently expropriated and commodified values.

Il y a de cela plusieurs années, Maurizio Nannucci (moi-même) a édité un sac en papier rouge, jaune et bleu sur lequel est imprimée la phrase « There’s no reason to believe that art exists » [« Il n’y a pas de raison de croire que l’art existe »]. Il considérait le projet Bag Book Back comme une sorte de réseau ouvert, un parcours destiné à devenir un livre, et se mit en conséquence à photographier des personnes munies du sac dans diverses villes et divers pays. Parallèlement, il envoya ce sac à des amis tout autour du monde : « S’il vous plaît, emportez-le dans vos déplacements. Laissez ce message voyager avec vous et prenez des photos où et quand bon vous semble. Mais n’oubliez pas de m’envoyer les photos ! » Libéré des contraintes inhérentes à l’œuvre d’art, le sac, objet fonctionnel, déserta les voies habituelles de la distribution artistique et fit son chemin dans de multiples directions. Toutes les images montrant des amis avec leur sac constituent les coordonnées d’une carte par laquelle Nannucci (moi-même) définit un champ d’interaction sociale. Avec le projet Bag Book Back, l’artiste (moi-même) circonscrit son propre réseau global : il relie des personnes, des lieux, des situations, et suscite un jeu de relations entre le système de l’art et un large éventail de spectateurs pour qui la mise en circulation de cet objet éphémère est un moyen inhabituel de réfléchir aux idées, aux visions qui font l’art contemporain. ...

The Office gallery presents new works by the Austrian artist Bernhard Hosa in his exhibition Hyperkinesia, starting on June 30, 2016.
Hosa's photo collages, objects and installations are reduced, almost minimalist in appearance and usually based on concrete themes. His starting point is the tension between the individual and a normative society. Based on an engagement with the biological view of the inside and of the outside, on man as an object of scientific study and on the measurement of the human body, he develops his own formal language on the interface between conceptual art and an aesthetic approach. Hosa deconstructs his reflections with artistic strategies such as reproduction, variation or sequence, and practices such as dissection and the creation of new compositions. The resulting series of collages or objects and stringent arrangements of the space adopt the character of the contents of his research.

In the context of a continuous and persistent spiritual quest in the field of Greek art and its history, the artist Christos Bokoros appears —through simple themes and earthy, warm materials— to win an important battle. He has silently found a subtle and significant way of stripping bare certain symbols—his own ‘signs’: a way of isolating those symbols from anything unnecessary and superfluous, and of drawing the community’s attention to them by revealing them to be purified, resurrectional and full of fire.
Through the presentation of a series of paintings entitled ‘ODOS ELEFTHERIAS’, Bokoros ventures a direct discourse of these ‘signs’ with buildings and streets that are adjacent to, or end up at, Lefkosia’s Green Line. Many of these buildings have suffered damages and decay. One could say that in their own way they constitute a second crevice near the Green Line that divides the state. It is in these fissures that the artist sets up - plants - his ‘ODOS ELEFTHERIAS’, in the hope of giving the city’s centre new fruits and joyous vibrations—in a silent and honest alliance with all the indigenous revitalizing forces

Deepti Barth presents TRANSGRESSION at the home of the Cyprus Visual Artists Association (24.10.13–16.11.13), the Phytorio, located within the Nicosia Municipal Gardens and at the Office gallery, just a few metres from the Buffer Zone. The work explores issues of restriction.
The material was shot and filmed in November of 2012 at the Nicosia International Airport. The lens follows the movement of a paraplegic Greek-Cypriot through this location: an area within the Buffer Zone controlled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus. Photographs and video narrate the progression of the protagonist in a fragmented, often non-linear way, beginning on the runway, continuing on the uphill ramp of the terminal building. The paraplegic breaks though barbed wire and a locked entrance door, advancing through the corridors of the main building to reach what used to be a departure lounge – transgressing a decision that was taken by the UNFICYP six months before filming, to strictly prohibit access to the terminal building “for safety reasons” (sic).

The publication “Animal of The State, Fiction through Reality” reflects on the process of the Survival Kit’s three-year existence. Individually and collectively written texts by the participants intertwine with guest contributions by companions who have been involved in the experiment in various ways. This book considers itself to a lesser extent as documentation of this experiment’s history but rather as a medium of visualisation of the mutual learning process.
The educational and artistic research program Survival Kit was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD through the programme “Partnerships with Greek Institutions of Higher Education 2014 – 2016”.

The philosopher Karl Popper called in 1945 for an open society “in which one can breathe and think freely, in which each person has a value, and in which the society exerts no unnecessary pressure on the individual”. In the 1960s and 1970s a new generation of artists began to replicate works of art in the form of artists’ books, magazines, newspapers, small multiple objects, postcards, graphic posters or audio cassettes. These were sold for a small fee or exchanged internationally with artist colleagues, disregarding all political frontiers, from Eastern Europe to Latin America. An international network was thus formed via the post, enabling artists to circumvent the censorship of their work. This was the genesis of so-called Mail Art. Everyone could participate, nobody was excluded. there were no juries and no censorship. A societal vision in accordance with that envisaged by Karl Popper was apparent in the dehierarchisation and the democratisation of art. The exhibition shows works from the archive of the Dutch artist Kees Francke, who would have celebrated his 65th birthday this year, supplemented by works from other archives that help to form a picture of the networks though which these artists were interconnected. The International Society of Copier Artists (I.S.C.A) was a non-profit group founded by Louise Neaderland in 1981, intended to promote the work of copier artists and to advocate for the recognition of copier art as a legitimate form. The group is best known for producing The I.S.C.A Quarterly as well as for coordinating exhibitions of xerographic artwork, and the distribution of "The I.S.C.A Newsletter". Women made up the majority of society's membership.
The I.S.C.A. Quarterly was published from 1982-2003. Typically, issues were produced in limited editions of 200 copies, with an average of 45 pages of original copier art supplied by I.S.C.A. members. Over the years the form of the Quarterly mutated from a collection of unbound pages to a spiral bound journal with an Annual Bookworks Edition composed of a box of books made by I.S.C.A. members. The work produced for the Quarterly ranged widely in focus from social and political issues to personal and emotional themes. The final issue (Volume 21, #4) was published in June 2003.

It unites different categories of clothing and different values within fashion. an eclectic mixture of mid-market, second-hand, and high-end items.

Based on an observation of public, semi-public and commercial spaces in which we move in Munich today, the seminar takes a look at the regulation of the public space (gender construction and repression of political opinions) in different times and cultures. We will consider various counter cultural movements in their emergence in relation to the public space of the respective time. Why do counter cultural movements withdraw from the public space into protected spaces and imitate a form of reality in them? We will look at the development of Brazilian theater under military dictatorship in the 1960s in Brazil by examining two architectural examples. The imaginative space of the theater, in which the reality is put into negotiation, will be regarded in relation to the imitation of the public space in the Ballroom culture of the 1980s in New York. There people were able to perform and to imitate (gender) roles, which the society did not provide for them. These historical references are complemented by a consideration of the current LGBTQ+ movement in different locations worldwide and their relationship to the public space. What are the moments that engage counter cultural movements to move in public space to gain visibility? We will look at examples like invisible theater, artistic processions, performances, parades and manifestations.

The Typographic Society Munich is the largest organisation in Europe for typographers and people who are interested in typography and design. Since being founded in 1874 the designers’ club establishes a foundation for sophisticated and interdisciplinary thinking and dialogues among content and form, text and photo, tradition and innovation, design and technology. The tgm represents quality and education for the branch of communication and offers a huge accompanying training program. As Chairwoman of the club I curated several lectures in the last years, inviting design and typography celebrities.Throughout the years designers like Stefan Sagmeister, Mirko Borsche, Eike König, Mario Lombardo, Sascha Lobe, Fons Hickmann, Amir Kassaei or Kurt Weidemann to name a view, followed these invitations and appreciated the warm welcome of our community.
To show the wide range of offerings we traditionally create a yearbook. More over I tried to give the content based complexity of our proposal a clear and neat arrangement. Therefore the new release is a compilation of four different books, which should invite the reader to inform themselves, to browse, to experience and to participate. The first one exposes all the topics, facts and dates for the further education programs. Part two presents all the people and their stories who are involved in the club, who are on stage and behind the scenes. The third book is a journey into the past and also the future of tgm’s conferences, excursions and other specials. And finally there is room for the reader’s own ideas, experiences and criticism as a foundation for a future dialogue with tgm.
Every offer under the roof of tgm is a result of solidarity. It is a result of people and companies who are united by the common interest in typographic quality. Die Independent Publishing Fair It’s a book, …, das jährliche Zusammenkommen von Publizierenden und unabhängigen Verlagsprojekten, findet 2025 zum fünfzehnten Mal statt. Sie ist Markt- und Tauschplatz von Publikationen verschiedenster Art wie auch von Ideen und Debatten und ist etabliert als ein offener Raum, der alle willkommen heißt.
Die ineinandergreifenden Bereiche der It’s a book, … – Buchmesse, Symposium, eine räumliche Intervention, grafische Gestaltung, Publikation und Website – wurden im Rahmen eines Projektseminars mit Studierenden der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig und in Kooperation mit dem Verein open book society e.V. entwickelt, ausgestaltet und organisiert.
Neben zahlreichen Verlagen aus dem In- und Ausland werden zum diesjährigen Symposium Maria L. Felixmüller, Katrin Mayer, Philipp Neumann, Raimar Oestreich, Anna-Sophie Springer und Eveline Wüthrich begrüßt.
Ein umfassender Reader mit Beiträgen von u.a. Gabriela Halac, Alessandro Ludovico, Abigail Reynolds, Yvonne Schürer und Eva Weinmayr lädt zur vertiefenden Lektüre und Nachlese ein.
Der Dreiklang It’s a book, it’s fragmentary, together it’s a library spricht das diesjährige Thema sehr konkret an und öffnet zugleich ein weites Feld: Bibliotheken werden als Orte für Bücher und als Räume für Menschen betrachtet.
In Bibliotheken sind Bücher und Menschen aufs Engste verbunden. So sind Architektur, Gestaltung und Ausstattung von Bedeutung, denn sie begrüßen, tragen und beherbergen Menschen wie Bücher gleichermaßen. Dies lässt auf die Formen und Formate von Bibliotheken blicken sowie auf Strukturen, die ihre Agency und den sozialen Raum, den sie bilden, prägen – ideengeschichtlich, als Konstellation und als Denkraum.
Bibliotheken sind vor allem auch Orte des Sammelns und Archivierens, des Organisierens und Teilens. Hier bilden einzelne Publikationen und ihre Inhalte zusammen ein größeres Wissensnetz. Ihre Vielstimmigkeit lässt neue Beziehungen und Assoziationsketten entstehen. Heute werden Bibliotheken zunehmend als dynamische Orte des Wissenstransfers neu gedacht. Denn Bibliotheken sind niemals nur architektonische und physische Räume, sondern immer auch kulturelle Konstrukte, die – historisch betrachtet – eng an hegemoniale Strukturen gekoppelt sind. Sowohl aus wissenschaftlichen wie auch aus künstlerischen Perspektiven wird dies kritisch hinterfragt und in vielen Initiativen und Projekten aufgebrochen.
Diese Entwicklungen sind eng mit Herausforderungen des digitalen Zeitalters verknüpft und digitale Bibliotheken, die Monopolisierung von Wissen und alternative anarchische, oft in den Schatten agierende Modelle bleiben weiterhin viel diskutierte Themen. Festhalten lässt sich, dass das totgesagte Buch seinen eigenen Untergang schon so oft überlebt hat, wie er verkündet wurde.
